In the beginning…

The first meeting for the formation of a Jacksonville golf association for women was held Tuesday, November 1, 1927, on the 3rd floor of the YMCA building on Laura St. The meeting was well-attended and the name Jacksonville Women’s Golf Association was officially established.

Until those present could become better acquainted, Miss Mary Clark was chosen temporary president. Other officers to serve for a one month period were Mrs. B.R. Bennett, Secretary and Mrs. William B. Doe, Treasurer. Mrs. A.B. Conley was one of the four ladies to serve on the Tournament Committee.

On Wednesday, November 9, 1927, the first playday was held on the old Municipal course. It was a blind bogey event with 21 players. Mrs. C.L. Swann was the winner with an 87. They teed off at 9:00 am and the newspaper stated that it lasted until noon.

Mrs. John L. Holmes (Winnie) was our first elected president and during her presidency, she also won the Florida Women’s Golf Association Championship. After a grueling 36 hole match with Winnie Holmes, Miss Mary Clark was our first JWGA Champion.
